Phase Separation Driven by External Fluctuations
The influence of external fluctuations in phase separation processes is
analysed. These fluctuations arise from random variations of an external
control parameter. A linear stability analysis of the homogeneous state shows
that phase separation dynamics can be induced by external noise. The spatial
structure of the noise is found to have a relevant role in this phenomenon.
Numerical simulations confirm these results. A comparison with order-disorder
noise induced phase transitions is also made.Comment: 4 pages, 4 Postscript figures included in text. LaTeX (with Revtex

Evaluation of bistable systems versus matched filters in detecting bipolar pulse signals
This paper presents a thorough evaluation of a bistable system versus a
matched filter in detecting bipolar pulse signals. The detectability of the
bistable system can be optimized by adding noise, i.e. the stochastic resonance
(SR) phenomenon. This SR effect is also demonstrated by approximate statistical
detection theory of the bistable system and corresponding numerical
simulations. Furthermore, the performance comparison results between the
bistable system and the matched filter show that (a) the bistable system is
more robust than the matched filter in detecting signals with disturbed pulse
rates, and (b) the bistable system approaches the performance of the matched
filter in detecting unknown arrival times of received signals, with an
especially better computational efficiency. These significant results verify
the potential applicability of the bistable system in signal detection field.Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures, MikTex v2.
Generalization of escape rate from a metastable state driven by external cross-correlated noise processes
We propose generalization of escape rate from a metastable state for
externally driven correlated noise processes in one dimension. In addition to
the internal non-Markovian thermal fluctuations, the external correlated noise
processes we consider are Gaussian, stationary in nature and are of
Ornstein-Uhlenbeck type. Based on a Fokker-Planck description of the effective
noise processes with finite memory we derive the generalized escape rate from a
metastable state in the moderate to large damping limit and investigate the
effect of degree of correlation on the resulting rate. Comparison of the
theoretical expression with numerical simulation gives a satisfactory agreement
and shows that by increasing the degree of external noise correlation one can
enhance the escape rate through the dressed effective noise strength.Comment: 9 pages, 1 figur
Rapidly driven nanoparticles: Mean first-passage times and relaxation of the magnetic moment
We present an analytical method of calculating the mean first-passage times
(MFPTs) for the magnetic moment of a uniaxial nanoparticle which is driven by a
rapidly rotating, circularly polarized magnetic field and interacts with a heat
bath. The method is based on the solution of the equation for the MFPT derived
from the two-dimensional backward Fokker-Planck equation in the rotating frame.
We solve these equations in the high-frequency limit and perform precise,
numerical simulations which verify the analytical findings. The results are
used for the description of the rates of escape from the metastable domains
which in turn determine the magnetic relaxation dynamics. A main finding is
that the presence of a rotating field can cause a drastic decrease of the
relaxation time and a strong magnetization of the nanoparticle system. The
resulting stationary magnetization along the direction of the easy axis is
compared with the mean magnetization following from the stationary solution of
the Fokker-Planck equation.Comment: 24 pages, 4 figure
Interferometry with Photon-Subtracted Thermal Light
We propose and implement a quantum procedure for enhancing the sensitivity
with which one can determine the phase shift experienced by a weak light beam
possessing thermal statistics in passing through an interferometer. Our
procedure entails subtracting exactly one (which can be generalized to m)
photons from the light field exiting an interferometer containing a
phase-shifting element in one of its arms. As a consequence of the process of
photon subtraction, and somewhat surprisingly, the mean photon number and
signal-to-noise ratio of the resulting light field are thereby increased,
leading to enhanced interferometry. This method can be used to increase
measurement sensitivity in a variety of practical applications, including that
of forming the image of an object illuminated only by weak thermal light
Decision and function problems based on boson sampling
Boson sampling is a mathematical problem that is strongly believed to be
intractable for classical computers, whereas passive linear interferometers can
produce samples efficiently. So far, the problem remains a computational
curiosity, and the possible usefulness of boson-sampling devices is mainly
limited to the proof of quantum supremacy. The purpose of this work is to
investigate whether boson sampling can be used as a resource of decision and
function problems that are computationally hard, and may thus have
cryptographic applications. After the definition of a rather general
theoretical framework for the design of such problems, we discuss their
solution by means of a brute-force numerical approach, as well as by means of
non-boson samplers. Moreover, we estimate the sample sizes required for their
solution by passive linear interferometers, and it is shown that they are
independent of the size of the Hilbert space.Comment: Close to the version published in PR
Targeting Mr Average: Participation, gender equity and school sport partnerships
The School Sport Partnership Programme (SSPP) is one strand of the national strategy for physical education and school sport in England, the physical education and school sport Club Links Strategy (PESSCL). The SSPP aims to make links between school physical education (PE) and out of school sports participation, and has a particular remit to raise the participation levels of several identified under-represented groups, of which girls and young women are one. National evaluations of the SSPP show that it is beginning to have positive impacts on young people's activity levels by increasing the range and provision of extra curricular activities (Office for Standards in Education (OFSTED), 2003, 2004, 2005; Loughborough Partnership, 2005, 2006). This paper contributes to the developing picture of the phased implementation of the programme by providing qualitative insights into the work of one school sport partnership with a particular focus on gender equity. The paper explores the ways in which gender equity issues have been explicitly addressed within the 'official texts' of the SSPP; how these have shifted over time and how teachers are responding to and making sense of these in their daily practice. Using participation observation, interview and questionnaire data, the paper explores how the coordinators are addressing the challenge of increasing the participation of girls and young women. The paper draws on Walby's (2000) conceptualisation of different kinds of feminist praxis to highlight the limitations of the coordinators' work. Two key themes from the data and their implications are addressed: the dominance of competitive sport practices and the PE professionals' views of targeting as a strategy for increasing the participation of under-represented groups. The paper concludes that coordinators work within an equality or difference discourse with little evidence of the transformative praxis needed for the programme to be truly inclusive. © 2008 Taylor & Francis
Reduction and reconstruction of stochastic differential equations via symmetries
An algorithmic method to exploit a general class of infinitesimal symmetries
for reducing stochastic differential equations is presented and a natural
definition of reconstruction, inspired by the classical reconstruction by
quadratures, is proposed. As a side result the well-known solution formula for
linear one-dimensional stochastic differential equations is obtained within
this symmetry approach. The complete procedure is applied to several examples
with both theoretical and applied relevance
Escape rate from a metastable state weakly interacting with a heat bath driven by an external noise
Based on a system-reservoir model, where the reservoir is driven by an
external stationary, Gaussian noise with arbitrary decaying correlation
function, we study the escape rate from a metastable state in the energy
diffusion regime. For the open system we derive the Fokker-Planck equation in
the energy space and subsequently calculate the generalized non-Markovian
escape rate from a metastable well in the energy diffusion domain. By
considering the dynamics in a model cubic potential we show that the results
obtained from numerical simulation are in good agreement with the theoretical
prediction. It has been also shown numerically that the well known turnover
feature can be restored from our model.Comment: 11 pages, 2 figure
